In analogy with the photographic medium, on which light rests to reveal an image, photographer Sophie Delaporte decides for this series of photographs to stage paper tablecloths in a familiar setting that soon imposes itself as the sole subject.
Thus, during an entire afternoon, we observe the changing and declining shadows of the sun, the intermittent passages of clouds, the reflections of colors on the white wall of a balustrade, or the wind making and undoing these improbable paper sculptures.
« Color Studies » reads like a series of explorations on the notion of the « artistic gesture », on the concept of time, and on our humble and fragile place in nature.
The artist unfurls her canvases as if telling a story… The story of a child who passes by and invents stories, but also that of the combined wind and clouds, which suddenly destroy the drawing she hoped for, only to offer another.
Color simplifies the form, plays with perspectives, modifies our perception of volumes, and disrupts and transforms our vision in constructions often nourished by references to painting or sculpture.
The development of these fragile installations gives rise to multiple and playful improvisations, where the artist observes the work in progress, constantly searching for a certain form of poetic abstraction.
